Improving Lives: USGBC Facilitates E10 Trial Program For Indigenous Communities In Taiwan

Last week, the U.S. Grains & BioProducts Council (USGBC) and Sanyang Motor (SYM), in partnership with the Tmabun Association, launched the Bioethanol Mobility Initiative to support indigenous communities in Taichung’s mountainous region and test the efficiency of gasoline blended with 10 percent ethanol (E10) in the area.

As part of this corporate social responsibility (CSR) pilot program, two motorcycles and a steady supply of E10 gasoline were donated to enhance the tribe’s “Meals on Wheels” service, improving mobility and food delivery across rugged terrain.

“This real-world demonstration of ethanol’s performance and safety will track vehicle operations over extended distances, generating practical data confirming ethanol as a clean, reliable and high-performance alternative to conventional gasoline,” said Michael Lu, USGBC director in Taiwan.

The project is being implemented in two phases, starting with the official handover of the motorcycles and the commencement of scheduled E10 gasoline support. In the second phase, once the motorcycles reach a cumulative mileage of 3,000 kilometers, the partners will host a press conference detailing the results.

The event will also be featured in a documentary capturing the project’s impact, comparing emissions data demonstrating improved air quality compared to traditional fuels and first-hand testimonials from the Tmabun Association confirming ethanol’s effectiveness as a clean and compatible “drop-in” fuel solution.

“This initiative will underscore the Council’s and SYM’s shared commitment to sustainable energy and community engagement, while providing tangible evidence to support broader biofuel adoption in Taiwan,” Lu said.

“This is an important public education program on ethanol in Taiwan, and we hope it will have a noticeable impact on the community here and contribute to greater global ethanol consumption.”
